PMSCs and WPS in a Globalised World Working Group

Co-chairs: Amanda Chisholm and Sorcha MacLeod

Private, Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) s are having a profound impact upon how war and security is operationalised globally. They now remain indispensable to how liberal states wage war—yet the nature of their work, and the consequences to the broader Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda have yet to be realised.

This group, bringing together a network of global practitioners and academics from political science, feminism, anthropology, and law, will begin to systematically map PMSC global operations including:

  1. Mapping how these global practices (re)shape/sustain colonial, racial and gendered dimensions of global security.
  2. Exploring how privatisation of Artificial Intelligence is impacting WPS with particular attention to security technologies and movement of people.
  3. Mapping how national/local operations impact who PMSCs keep safe/make safe, and what other insecurities they might exacerbate.
  4. Mapping specifically how, if at all, PMSCs are adapting to WPS initiatives and how WPS initiatives might be adjusted to encompass PMSCs.

Introduction

Co-Chair Amanda Chisholm explains the areas of focus for the PMSCS and WPS in a Globalised World Working Group.
